Michael was born on 7 October 1982 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He is was raised by young working African-American parents along with his siblings. Little much is known about his family as one of his brothers is at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Earlier Seibel attended an expensive private school in Brooklyn. He did his high school in New Jersey after his parents moved there. After high school, he went to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. There, he earned his BA in political science, graduating in 2005.

After graduation, Michael worked as a finance director for Kweisi Mfume for the U.S. Senate until November 2006. Moving to Silicon Valley, he co-founded Justin.tv, a live streaming platform along with Justin Kan, Emmett Shear, and Kyle Vogt. He served as CEO of the company from 2006 to 2011. Afterward, he launched a social video-sharing app, Socialcam, and sold to Autodesk for $60 million in 2012.
From January 2013 to October 2014, Seibel was a part-time partner at Y Combinator. He then became its first African-American partner. Besides, he advised hundreds of startups including Airbnb.

On 10 June 2020, Reddit announced that Michael will be joining its board of directors as its first Black member, after the resignation of Reddit’s co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
